Autolib in Paris is the first of its kind self-service car rental system that allows cars to be picked up at one location and returned to any other station with 24-hour accessibility. The fleet is comprised of 100% electric Bluecars that are clean and silent, reducing noise and air pollution.
Autolib is an economical, practical and eco-friendly solution to short-term car rental needs. You purchase a subscription via video conference at an Autolib kiosk, for a day or a week pass (10-15 euro). The kiosk prints a personal badge that gives you self-service rental access. Rentals cost 6-7 euro per half hour of vehicle use. Obviously, it could get expensive for lengthy rentals, but when you park the car and plug it in to a charging station, the rental ends. You can pick up a car, drive across town for shopping, dining or a business meeting and drop the car at that location. Whenever you are ready to return, simply pick up another car and drive back, so you only pay for driving time.

The whole Autolib system is self-service, so there are no lines or waiting times. You just need an international driver’s license, passport and credit card. All cars are non-smoking and rental rates include insurance. The Bluecar accommodates four passengers and the seating system allows the attachment of child/infant car seats (not provided). Cars have air bags and digital data screens but are not air conditioned.
The official opening of Autolib service was in December 2011 with only 250 cars, but the weekly growth is on track to have 1740 Bluecars in service and 1,100 stations with 5,000 charging points by June 2012. Ultimately at full development, there will be 3,000 Bluecars and 6,600 recharging stations operating in the Ile de France region. The fleet of electric Bluecars will reduce private vehicles by 22,500, making a tangible impact on the environment. Along with less pollution, there will be less traffic and less stress on the roads.
Similar to the very popular Velib bicycle share program, Autolib car rental is both ecological and practical. To give this innovative program a try, contact Covington Travel to arrange your next trip to Paris.
