If you’re always itching to stretch your limits, we have good news: There’s adventure travel for every month of the year! We’ve selected bucket list journeys around the globe that allow you to hike, swim and view wildlife during optimal weather and conditions of the destination for your active pursuits in 2015.
January – Visit Antarctica for the expedition of a lifetime! Explore in comfort on a luxurious all-suite expedition vessel, or make it a true adventure by sea kayaking and snowshoeing the glacial landscape or viewing icebergs and penguins up close from a zodiac.
February – Travel to Thailand is best in the pleasantly warm “cool” season before the scorching hot and wet monsoon seasons that follow. Visit modern temples in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and meet the hill tribes on a Chiang Dao trek, visit an elephant sanctuary or frolic on the sunny beaches of the Thai islands.
March – Costa Rica is a top destination for outdoor adventure. With pristine beaches, tropical rivers, majestic volcanoes and rainforests, there’s no limit to the active adventures that await: surfing, white-water rafting, hiking, zip lining and much more! Costa Rica’s environmental commitments ensure that their unique topography and wildlife are protected and sustained, making it a top eco destination, too.
April – The Maldives, a chain of nearly 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean, arguably has the best beaches in the world. The underwater world is equally amazing: dive or snorkel on huge coral walls, and swim with sharks, manta rays and turtles. There are over 100 resorts, each on its own island, that offer the height of luxury. You’ll be hard pressed to pick a more romantic adventure destination!
May – The serious mountain trekker won’t be satisfied until they earn Everest Base Camp bragging rights, a pinnacle hike that takes you up to 18,000 feet into the Himalayas of Napal. Along the journey, pass through picturesque traditional villages where you’ll encounter the local Sherpa culture, visit ancient monasteries and local tea houses, and get fantastic up close views of the rugged Annapurna range.
June – Whether you hike the Inca Trail or take a train to the architectural treasure of Machu Picchu, first spend a couple days in Cusco, Peru and the Sacred Valley to explore the many cultural and pre-Columbian historic sites and acclimatize to the Andean altitude. Then visit the Lost City of the Incas, where many people feel a spiritual experience.
July – Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda is a bucket list item of unique magnitude; one of the greatest animal experiences on earth! Small groups trek into the jungle to find a family of mountain gorillas, then quietly observe as they play and interact in their natural habitat. The great apes were brought to visibility by primatologist Dian Fossey, who studied them in the wild for 18 years before her murder in 1985.
August – Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is not technically demanding and can be accomplished by anyone in reasonably good physical condition – but is a brag-worthy adventure, nonetheless. There are several routes, but the Marangu route is the easiest and shortest way to the summit. It’s also the only the route with sleeping huts that have solar lights and comfortable beds, so it’s known as the “Coca Cola” or “tourist” route.
September – The Galapagos Islands are a wonderful setting for a multi-generational eco-adventure. You can island-hop and stay in lodges – best if you want to combine diving days with classic wildlife tours – or stay aboard a yacht with naturalist leaders and twice-daily landings for excursions. The whole family will enjoy hiking, snorkeling, horseback riding and of course, fascinating wildlife is the star attraction.
October – Seeing the Great Migration in Kenya is an adventure of huge proportions. The sight of millions of Wildebeests grazing across the Masai Mara, joined by hundreds of thousands of zebra is mindboggling. The migration timing depends on water resources, but September to October is typical in Kenya and safari guides can take you to incredible wildlife any time of year.
November – Spring in New Zealand is a lovely time with baby lambs and flower blossoms, as well as outdoor adventure for nearly every fitness level. Enthusiastic Kiwis are ready with activities from rock climbing and caving to zip lining and zorbing to jet boating and bungee jumping to get your heart pumping and adrenalin flowing. If you can’t find adventure in New Zealand, you’re not looking!
December – Chilean Patagonia is the perfect destination for nature lovers who want to escape winter in North America. In the Lakes District of northern Patagonia enjoy trekking temperate rain forests, sea kayaking and horseback riding to a glacier. In Southern Patagonia hike the famously craggy mountains of Torres Del Paine (pronounced pie-nee) National Park for some of the most spectacular scenery you’ll ever see.
