You’ve probably heard the iconic slogan “Virginia is for Lovers.” The campaign was originally created in 1969 to encourage tourism to our fair state, but has both endured and become much beloved over the decades since. It probably took root and became so popular because vacationing is all about going to places you love, to do the things you love with the people you love and there’s plenty to love in Virginia!
Virginia offers her residents and visitors magnificent mountains and beautiful beaches, connected by the bucolic, rolling farmland of the piedmont. History buffs appreciate that Virginia’s past dates back to the beginnings of English settlement in the New World and includes major roles in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Outdoor activities, wine trails, theme parks, team sports and world class museums are all part of Virginia’s charm. Virginia truly has something for everyone to love.
Inspired by the original “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan, the Virginia Tourism Corporation built and sponsored several dozen “LOVEworks” around Virginia to show that “love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation.” The first ones were solid white, six-foot-tall letters at Virginia Welcome Centers, but as the number of LOVEworks grew, the public artworks took on regional characteristics of their Virginia locations. Wineries have made LOVEworks out of wine barrels and corks, Norfolk International Airport shows luggage LOVE, Waynesboro illustrates their fishing LOVE and of course, Richmond International Raceway confirms racing LOVE.
Personally, I can’t help but smile when I see the large, creative expressions of love. And they are photo ops just begging for you and those you love to pose by the letters or stick your head through the O for a picture! In fact, there’s a Consider this your personal invitation to visit Virginia – we’ve got plenty of LOVE to go around!
