Luxury vacation expert Karen Kilyk recommends that families begin planning as soon as the school calendars are released. Because spring is such a high travel season, the lower priced airline seats get snapped up early. The amount you save by purchasing airline tickets early could easily pay for an upgrade at your resort or cruise – some extra space or an ocean view is something the whole family can enjoy.

Speaking of extra space, vacation consultant Dan Smith is a fan of Caribbean villas for family travel. He says families appreciate a villa so that they can stay together but have room to spread out. Children can nap and sleep in their own room while parents can chat or have a nightcap in the living area without having to whisper. Some of Dan’s favorite Caribbean islands for family villas include St. Thomas, St. Martin and Jamaica.
Karen also likes Half Moon Villas in Jamaica for their resort services and activities, beautiful beach and spacious accommodations. For families with kids she recommends Beaches Turks & Caicos, an all-inclusive resort renowned as “the last of the true exotics.” Beaches has kids programs for toddlers to teens, although Karen notes that younger children probably enjoy them more than sophisticated teens.
Dale Fuller recommends Southern California as an alternative to high Caribbean airfares. She shared the many reasons families love the area in a previous post, Why Not SoCal?
For an active family vacation, advisor Cindi Brewer has arranged a very special trip this year for a family of five to visit the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon Key, Florida. The guests can choose from several levels of interaction with the dolphins, including swimming with them or even being a trainer for a day!
Disney specialist, Tracy Carr, says “Disney has many family-oriented trips beyond the traditional week at Magic Kingdom. Adventures by Disney provides immersive, guided family vacation experiences to exciting destinations like Costa Rica, Peru, Asia, South Africa, and Europe.” Disney Cruise Line is another family favorite; some Covington travelers return every year.
