When I was about seven years old, my parents drove the family station wagon cross-country on a three-week vacation, with me in the back seat and my baby brother rolling around in the “way-back” of the car in a pseudo-crib lined with bumper pads. (I know, you would never do that now, but don’t judge my Mother – this was eons ago, before car seats!)
Starting from our home in Kentucky, I remember going up in the St. Louis Arch, the flat farm land of the mid-west, my wide-eyed wonder at the glitz of Las Vegas, the dizzying height of the Hoover Dam, the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, the prehistoric Petrified Forest, the massive Arizona Meteor Crater and the tedium of hours crossing the desert. It was an epic family trip that culminated when my Grandfather and Uncle flew out to meet us at the shining mecca of Disneyland in California.
Yes, that trip had a lot of similarities to the infamous Griswold Family Vacation, minus the poor dog and Aunt Edna. But the real point is that even though I was only seven at the time, I still remember the sites we saw, the stories and history my parents told me along the way, and the camaraderie of a family adventure. Family travel, particularly multi-generational family travel, brings you closer together as you share the wonders of nature, the excitement of discovery and adventures of a lifetime.
Today there are much easier travel options designed specifically for families, so you don’t have to map out your own routes and stops, be your own tour guide and historian or drive the “family Truckster.”
