Christchurch, New Zealand has been shaken up, literally, by several major earthquakes over the last year. Powerful quakes in September, 2010 and February, 2011 caused significant damage and loss of life. The damage was limited to a seven square block area in the in the central business district of Christchurch and the good news is that the city is recovering, rebuilding and once again welcoming visitors.
In a recent phone interview with Travel Agent, Caroline Blanchfield, Business Development Manager for Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism said “Christchurch is doing well.” and that 99 percent of the city’s attractions are open and there is still plenty for visitors to do and see. “We’re letting people know that it’s okay. The airport is fine—it’s brand new, in fact! We just did a huge redevelopment.”*
Christchurch’s tourism has understandably declined dramatically, but Blanchfield said that they want visitors to come back. While most of the large hotels have been closed for reconstruction, there are still about 7,000 beds available in the city, including dozens of charming bed and breakfasts. She suggests using Christchurch as a gateway to the rest of New Zealand’s South Island.
The South Island has spectacular fjords and glaciers, agricultural plains and hundreds of streams and lakes. Kiwis, as New Zealanders are called, claim they have one of the world’s best outdoor environments to relax or get active. From picnics and barbecues to beaches and boating to hiking (locals call it tramping) and golfing, there is no shortage of recreation. You might even want to try those original Kiwi creations of bungee jumping and zorbing!
