Richmond, Virginia has a wealth of cultural attractions, historical sightseeing, shopping and fun activites to enjoy. It is a great weekend destination for those of us within driving distance, but even on vacation, sometimes we just need a day of relaxation. In Richmond, the James River is the perfect antidote.
On a recent hot and lazy summer weekend, some friends invited me to join them in their quest for respite from the steamy temperatures. I live about an hour and a half away and thought a weekend in Richmond was just the ticket for some weekend R&R.
We parked in a public parking access and took a 10 minute downhill trek to the bank of the James. Harper Lee, my friend’s dog, came along too, since the James is one of her favorite places to cool off.
The James River runs from the Blue Ridge Mountains of central Virgina, through the middle of Richmond and east to the coast. Just west of downtown Richmond, the river is shallow and rock-strewn. Looking east, the Richmond city skyline seems to rise right out of the middle of the river.
Just a short distance from the many Fortune 500 offices, political nerve centers and a highly-regarded urban university (VCU), tranquility runs right through the middle of Richmond’s metropolitan heart.
Looking up river, away from the city skyline, it’s hard to believe you are smack in the geographic middle of the capital city with a population of over 200,000. It is peaceful and quiet and utterly beautiful.
We spent the day swimming and rock-hopping, with a picnic thrown in for good measure.
By the end of the day, we had indeed succeeded in our two objectives: relaxing and cooling off. As we left the river for the hike back to civilization, we were treated to a view of the sinking sun reflected in the calm water.
