Charleston, South Carolina is a popular destination for corporate meetings and incentives, as well as individual vacations, and for good reason. When visiting Charleston, you get the distinct feeling of being immersed in a by-gone era, yet the historic city clearly keeps its pulse on the here and now.Â
Charleston is certainly a walking town but one of the best ways to get acquainted with the historic area is to take a carriage ride. You can sit back and relax as knowledgeable guides lead small groups throughout the historic area giving lessons on the culture, architecture, and history. After the carriage ride, take time to explore the historic area on foot. Wander the numerous stalls at City Market and learn first-hand the history behind the sweet-grass baskets. Get off the beaten path to explore the side streets lined with boutique shops, stately homes, colorful row houses, old churches, and beautiful gardens. Some of the homes are open to visitors: Aiken-Rhett House, Edmondston-Alston House, and Nathaniel Russell House. Learn about the different styles of architecture and about the generations of families that lived in these homes. If shopping is your quest, visit King Street where quality shops with the feel of an historic setting abound.
Although walking throughout the historic area is charming, at the end of the day you’re exhausted!  There is relief; Charleston has a free trolley! User friendly maps indicate routes, times, pick up and drop off locations.
Charleston is a culinary Mecca for Southern food done right! Situated along the Ashley and Cooper Rivers which flow into the Atlantic Ocean, fresh seafood is bountiful and local chefs turn these treasures from the sea into culinary masterpieces. Relax and make dining an experience!
Take a day to explore the plantation homes along the Ashley River: Middleton Place, Drayton Hall, Magnolia, Boone Hall, all with incredible history and beautiful landscaping.
Charleston has so much to offer, visitors should plan to spend three full days there to experience the beauty of this timeless city. Contact Covington Meetings & Events to make Charleston’s history, architecture, cuisine and charm the backdrop to your next meeting or incentive trip.

I have been to Charleston and waited for the free trolley. Since the trolleys have been made a free venture, you can wait 30 to 45 mins for one to come by. If you utilize the trolleys as your main transportation in the area, you better add a couple days to your stay!

I can think of a few things worse than a couple extra days in a charming city, but thanks for the trolly tip, A.P.! – Cheers – Beverly
